RANDOM ORBITAL SANDER
If you are in the market to buy just one sander, pick up a random orbital sander. This tool combines orbital motion with rotation and, when armed with the right sandpaper, can handle almost any job requiring abrasive action, from stripping paint to producing a nearly mirror finish on wood or metal. If you’ve got a lot of material to remove, use a belt sander.
Random orbital sanders come in three sizes. Palm sanders are for light-duty finish work. A pistol grip sander is for heavier work. Large right-angle sanders are for smoothing large surfaces, like floors and tabletops. Many models offer variable speeds as well as orbit modes for fine finishing or more aggressive action.
Look for a tool that has a vacuum adapter so you can connect it to your shop vac. This is a great addition to the tool, since you’re significantly reducing airborne hazards by directing the dust into the shop vac instead of letting it settle all over the place. While just about every random orbital sander does have a dust bag, they are no match for a vacuum attachment.
HOW TO CHOOSE SANDING DISKS
In addition to the vacuum adapter, you’ll need to select which of two sanding disks best suits your needs. We recommend going with the hook-and-loop system over the pressure-sensitive adhesive disc. The hook-and-loop, while a bit more expensive, allows the user to quickly and easily switch grits and reuse discs that aren’t yet worn out.
